Feeding the Hungry

“I talked to three people today at the BP station when I stopped for gas,” my husband said. “While I was filling up, a driver pulled up next to me. We got into a conversation about his 328d BMW. I noticed a car at another pump had a light out. I told the driver, a young guy, and he thanked me profusely. Then, after I pumped gas but before I drove off, I told the older gentleman waiting in line behind me that the pump was slow. ‘What?’: he asked. ‘The pump is slow.’ ‘Oh, no problem, I’m slow myself.’ It was a good day.”

Then the hubs said, “People are hungry, you know? Just for a little acknowledgement, a little attention.” His statement made me think of Barbara. Barbara is director for our area food pantry. I’ve seen her from time to time, have been introduced, but we’ve never had a conversation. This past week when I pulled up to our church for a prayer meeting, Barbara was unloading boxes from her SUV. The woman in the car with me who worked with Barbara told me Barbara did such a good job in that position, that she was at the church almost every day working.

As we walked into the church, I headed toward the kitchen area to find Barbara. “Hey,” I said. “I just wanted to tell you that you are doing a great job and that I know God is pleased with the work you do. This is a real ministry to a lot of people. I just wanted to thank you.” I went out to the sanctuary to join others at the prayer meeting, and while we were talking before we got started, Barbara came out of the kitchen area toward us. She rested her hand on mine. “How’s your daughter?” she asked. “I’ve been praying for her.” Then we hugged.

I have to agree with my husband. People are starving for just a little acknowledgment, a little kindness, a little attention. Barbara and I were both filled up that day.
